Windrose & Pocketpair — The Publisher Story

Pocketpair made Palworld. They didn't make Windrose — but they're publishing it. Here's what that actually means.

Last updated: May 2026

Who actually built Windrose

  • Developer: Kraken Express — independent studio based in Australia.
  • Publisher (Japan): Pocketpair Publishing — the same company behind Palworld.
  • Publisher (West): Kraken Express self-publishes outside Japan.

What Pocketpair Publishing does

Pocketpair Publishing is a label, not a co-developer. It handles localization, Japanese storefront placement, marketing and platform relationships. They do not control Kraken Express’ design decisions or patch cadence — that’s all on the Kraken team.

Why it matters for players

  • Higher visibility — Pocketpair’s post-Palworld reach drove the Steam launch attention.
  • Strong Japanese localization — full JP voice and text at launch.
  • Patch cadence is independent — driven by Kraken, not Pocketpair.
  • It is NOT a Palworld spin-off — different team, different engine, different design.
Common misconception
Windrose is sometimes called a “Pocketpair game”. They publish it in Japan — they didn’t make it. The dev team is Kraken Express, and the game runs on Unreal Engine 5, not Pocketpair’s internal stack.
